The Three Rivers Community College was established in 1992 by the union of Mohegan Community College and Thames Valley State Technical College. The public institution was named after the three major rivers in the region: the Shetucket, the Yantic and the Thames.

Three Rivers Community College covers the Three Rivers Middle College (TRMC). The Three Rivers Middle College is a dual-enrollment magnet high school.
